Build Your Foundation Right the First Time #

A metal building is only as strong as the foundation it sits on. Poor foundation prep leads to misaligned columns, failed inspections, and expensive delays. That’s why this section focuses on the exact tolerances, layout process, and anchor bolt guidance you need before concrete is poured.

SNAP’s Role vs Your Responsibility #

Foundation ElementResponsible Party
Foundation designYour licensed engineer
Anchor bolt locations (drawings)Provided by SNAP
Anchor bolt setting accuracyYour concrete contractor
Site excavation & formworkYour contractor or crew
Final inspection before concrete pourYour project lead or builder

Key Requirements for Your Foundation #

  • Must be square, flat, and level
  • Designed to local building code by a licensed engineer
  • Anchor bolts must be placed within ±1/16 inch
  • Concrete must fully cure (typically 7 days) before erecting steel

🔧 NOTE: Do not use preliminary plans to set anchor bolts—use only the final “For Construction” drawings provided by SNAP.

Foundation Layout Instructions #

To ensure your foundation is square:

  1. Measure diagonally from corner to corner
  2. Adjust layout until both diagonals are equal
  3. Confirm level top edge before forms are finalized

Anchor Bolt Placement Tips #

Even small mistakes in anchor bolt locations can throw off the entire building. Follow these guidelines carefully:

  • Use ASTM A-307 bolts with 2.5″ thread length
  • Wrap exposed threads with duct tape before concrete pour
  • Bolts must extend at least 2″ above slab surface
  • Use plywood templates to hold bolts in exact position
  • Drill air relief holes in templates to allow proper concrete flow

Foundation Checklist #

  • Final engineering reviewed and approved
  • “For Construction” drawings received from SNAP
  • Layout squared and rechecked
  • Anchor bolt templates built and confirmed
  • Concrete crew briefed on tolerances
  • Inspection scheduled before pour

FAQ #

What’s the biggest foundation mistake people make?
Setting anchor bolts off-spec. If they’re not within 1/16”, steel columns won’t fit properly.

Can SNAP design my slab or foundation?
We provide the anchor bolt layout with every building. We can also provide an engineered foundation design that includes slab thickness, rebar, soil recommendations, etc. A licensed foundation engineer can then stamp the foundation design to submit for permitting.

Can I build before the concrete is fully cured?
No. Early loading on green concrete can cause cracking, shifting, or bolt pullout. Wait 7 days minimum.
